Dock Hardware for a Stationary Wood Dock
A stationary dock relies on its leg system to support the frame and hold it at the correct height. Great Northern Docks carries structural hardware for docks built on either 4×4 wood posts or 1.5-inch galvanized pipe legs, including brackets, bracing hardware, driving caps, feet, and other components used throughout the build.
Post and pipe brackets connect the legs to the dock frame and allow for vertical adjustment, making it possible to level the dock after the supports are positioned. Bracing helps control side-to-side movement, while post feet and pipe feet provide a wider base when the lake bottom cannot support a narrow leg on its own.
Choosing Between Wood Posts and Galvanized Pipe Legs
Most stationary wood docks use one of two support systems.With a 4×4 wood-post system, pointed posts are positioned in the lake bottom, attached to the frame with post brackets, and reinforced with 2×4 cross-bracing. A driving cap protects the top of the post during installation. A typical 4-by-10-foot layout uses four legs on the first section and two additional legs for each section that follows.
Pipe-leg systems use 1.5-inch galvanized pipe attached to the frame with adjustable pipe brackets. In many locations, the pipe can be driven directly into the lake bottom with a sledgehammer. Pipe feet or augers may be added when softer, deeper, or more resistant bottom conditions require a different type of support.
The lake bottom plays an important role in determining which supports and hardware are appropriate. Firm bottoms may hold driven legs securely, while soft or mucky conditions often require feet that distribute the dock’s weight and reduce seasonal settling. Adjustable brackets allow the frame to be leveled before the decking is installed and readjusted later when needed.
